Subject: Growth Board Hearing June 24, 25, 26

Dear Neighbors and Friends,
The purpose of this Newsletter is to update you on Common Sense Alliance’s (CSA) progress in our efforts to appeal the Critical Area Ordinances (CAO) on behalf of San Juan County property owners and citizens, and to once again request your financial support.
CSA will appear as one of five "petitioners" challenging the Critical Area Ordinances before the state Growth Management Hearings Board (GMHB) at a hearing on June 24, 25 and 26 in Friday Harbor.  Sandy Mackie of the Perkins Coie Law Firm in Seattle is representing CSA in the appeal.
This past week, Sandy spent three days in Friday Harbor working with the CSA team, reviewing and making additions to the County's 35,000 page “Record” and laying the groundwork for the June hearing.  Incidentally, at a Pre-Hearing Conference several weeks ago, the Presiding Officer of the GMHB stated that this is “the most complicated and complex case" he has seen during his four and one half year tenure on the Board.  In spite of this daunting task, Sandy departed Thursday, leaving us all with a sense of accomplishment, enthusiasm and optimism for success.
As you can well imagine, Sandy’s superb representation is not cheap.  We estimate that his preparation of briefs, appearance before the Growth Hearings Board (and potential further appeal), legal comments and arguments concerning the proposed Shoreline Management Program update and the day-to-day operations of CSA will cost in the neighborhood of $150,000 in 2013.
CSA has achieved a little over 50% of our near-term fundraising goal of $75K, an effort that began in January.  This is just half of what it will take to get through the first six months of the year.  Please note that CSA’s policy is to have as little cash on hand as possible to cover projected expenses in any six-month period—but we need $75K now.
We need your support.  Any amount that you are comfortable in contributing is urgently needed to ensure CSA’s success at the June Hearing.  And … to give you some idea of an appropriate contribution, many donors are giving a $1,000 or more.  Tax-deductible contributions may be mailed to Common Sense Alliance, PO Box 1249, Friday Harbor, WA 98250.
Please call me at 425-444-0041, if you have any questions.
We will be emailing CSA Newsletters periodically with more details about the Hearings Board proceedings so that all can share in the excitement and challenges of this journey.
Again, thanks so much for your generous and timely consideration.
