Implementation Date of CAO Has Been Extended (Again)

Dear San Juan County Neighbors and Friends,

In a 5-1 vote last Tuesday (Jamie Stephens, Lopez, opposing), the County Council voted to delay the implementation of the Critical Areas Ordinance to March 2014.  In a candid exchange between Senior County Planner, Shireene Hale, the architect of the CAOs, said they were complicated much like the “tax code,” and even she did not understand them, particularly the section on the non-conforming structures and uses.

As is always the case, this Council, or the new May 1 Council, could vote again and select another effective date.

This brings us to another important point:  On April 23 the voters will choose a new three (3) person council.  This is an important election!  Please find your ballots and vote for one (1) candidate from each of the major islands:  San Juan, Orcas and Lopez.

Thank you to those of you who have sent donations to assist with our legal fees.  We are about 2/3rds of the way toward our mid-year goal of $75,000.
